This is the first piece in this series of gem-like models, which I constructed and mounted in hand-made and manufactured jewel boxes. I saw this as practical for presentation and preservation. As a familiar cultural artifact, the jewel-box also works as an ideal framing device to further the illusory effect. Along with the series title, Glass Distinctions, the added contextualization enhances a general reference in my work to the process of assigning cultural value, or discerning the status of precious objects like gemstones, or works of art.
